Principal Research Officer


We are looking to appoint an Principal Research Officer for 10 months with possibility to extend to 12 months for maternity cover on a fixed term contract or secondment. You will be part of Evidence & Insight, a dedicated in-house social research team consisting of experienced social researchers and analysts conducting research into crime, criminal justice and policing for London The Team work for the Mayor’s Office for Policing And Crime (MOPAC) which is the organisation through which the Mayor of London exercises his role as the Police and Crime Commissioner for London.  

Your role is to oversee a portfolio of research, with a specific focus on evaluations of key programmes and pilot initiatives to support MOPAC strategy and key policy areas. The focus will be on management responsibilities and you will be expected to oversee a number of analysts and researchers across different projects. Key skills will therefore relate to programme and risk management, planning, directing, conducting, writing and quality assuring research. Examples of current projects include:

• A partnership project seeking to encourage individuals to exit gangs
• A collaborative services model for restorative justice in London that supports the needs of victims
• A Pan-London Domestic Violence service designed to enhance and coordinate support provisions for victims of  domestic abuse

The research projects you will oversee will be a complex mix of methodological designs – and it is expected that the role holder will hold a general level of research/evaluation expertise (e.g., process, impact, experimental evaluations) in order to guide staff. The role holder will also be expected to liaise very closely with policy and staff implementing the initiatives in particular around data capture and emphasising programme integrity. The role holder will also represent the research portfolio at relevant meetings/boards.
